John Palmer Esser died suddenly on June 5, 2021 at his home in East Lansing, Michigan. He is survived by his fiance DeShaun Snead; sister, Linda Skidmore of Bainbridge, Georgia; sister, Pam Esser of Bloomfield Township; nephew, Aaron Esser-Kahn; and niece, Alisa Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Palmer and Marcella Esser of Farmington, Michigan.
John was born on September 24, 1947 in Detroit and graduated from Farmington High School. He attended Michigan State University and graduated with a B.S. in Economics. He was a percussionist, and played drums in bands from his early teens. He toured in Michigan and the midwest with Universal Family, later Universe, and released several recordings in the '70s. His artistic endeavors extended into music production and local theatre, and he continued his love for music all his life. He produced, wrote, and recorded music in the studio that he built, Heron Productions. Most recently his trio, Mighty Medicine, played in wineries, senior facilities, and events in Florida, Michigan, and California. He left behind many friends and collaborators in music and the arts.
He worked for the State of Michigan Insurance Bureau for 25 years and retired early to take care of his mother who was in declining health. He was a neighborhood watch leader, and active in Meridian Township politics.
His positive attitude, active imagination, thoughtful contributions, calm presence, ceaseless encouragement, and gentle kindness made a lasting impact on everyone he encountered. A celebration of life will be held from 4:00 until 8:00 on June,13th at North Meridian Road Park, 5191 N. Meridian Road, Williamston. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to the Alzheimers Association or the Capital Area Humane Society.
