John was born July 28, 1938 in Lansing, MI, the son of Lester and Mabel (Frever) Rowan. He passed away September 9, 2012 at the age of 74. John was a graduate of Sexton High School. He served in the U.S. Navy and then taught school for 42 years in Imlay City and Haslett schools. He coached basketball, football, swimming, wrestling, cross country and track. John was Class B Coach of the Year for track in the State of Michigan. He received numerous awards for his accomplishments. John was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Charlotte and enjoyed hunting, golfing and traveling. He enjoyed his winters in Arizona.
John is predeceased by his parents and a son, Timothy, who died in 1990. Surviving is his wife of 47 years, Joanne; a daughter, Heather (Joseph) Serafinski; 3 grandchildren, Julia, Natalie and Austin; a brother, Joseph J. (Barb) Rowan; 2 sisters, Margaret (Doug) Koski and Mary (Bill) Kusiak; as well as several nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 955 Alton Rd., East Lansing, on Thursday, September 13,at 11:00 a.m. with The Rev. Francis Mossholder of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Charlotte, MI officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Lansing, MI. The family will receive friends at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing, on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. The rosary will be prayed Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
