John was born in Flint, Michigan on November 22, 1940 to Benjamin and Agata Sargis. He graduated from Northern High School in 1959 and later graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Journalism.
John worked as the Associated Press Editor at the Flint Journal then as a Copy Editor for the Midland Daily News.
His sisters, Hannah Warda and Murasa Sargis and a brother, Joseph and his wife, Maria, in Chandler, Arizona survive him. He had 9 nephews and 3 nieces. His parents and sister, Julia, preceded him in death.
A memorial will be will be held at St. Paul Episcopal at a later date.
