March 24, 1930 – January 11, 2021
June L. White, 90, of East Lansing, formerly of Big Rapids and Canadian Lakes, died Monday, January 11, 2021.
June was born on March 24, 1930 in Detroit, Michigan, the second (of seven) child of Robert and Florence (Standeaven) Brown. June married Donald F. White in September 1950. They moved with their family to Big Rapids in 1961, where Don became the college/university architect at Ferris State until his retirement in 1992. After retirement, Don and June moved to Canadian Lakes, where they lived until Don’s death in 2002 after 51 very happy years together. June remained in Canadian Lakes until she moved to Burcham Hills Retirement Center in East Lansing in 2017.
June was employed by Ferris State at the School of Business. After earning her Associates degree from FSC, she served as an academic counselor at the School of Allied Health until her retirement in 1987. She thoroughly enjoyed interacting with the students she assisted while at FSU.
June was an avid bridge player and quilter. She enjoyed golfing, canoeing and cross country skiing with her family and friends, and traveling throughout North America and Europe. June was a wonderful mother to her four children, and served as a loving adoptive mother to two foreign exchange students from Norway, and as a surrogate mother for many of her children’s friends. She enjoyed spending as much time as possible with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
June was an active member of the United Church of Big Rapids, serving as the church librarian and participating on many committees. June was a hospice volunteer, and was a dedicated supporter of the WISE women’s shelter in Big Rapids.
June is survived by her four children: Paul (Nancy) White of Haslett MI, Diane (John) White-Stengel of Gaines MI, Greg (Junru) White of Rockville MD, and Bradley White of Canadian Lakes MI, along with grandchildren Heather, Sara, Lauren, Lindsay and Eric, step-grandchildren Aaron, Sarah, Christopher and Shaowen, great-grandchildren Hailey and Colton and step-great grandchildren Soren, Avery, Meadow, Carissa, and Quinten. She is also survived by her sister, Charlotte (Frank) Lucido, and sisters-in-law Judy Brown and Sheryl Brown, along with many nieces and nephews.
A private family memorial gathering is planned for later this year. The family requests that memorial donations be directed to June’s favorite charity: Women’s Information Services (WISE), PO Box 1249, Big Rapids, MI 49307, or online at wiseagainstviolence.org.
