June 15, 1949 - November 29, 2024
Dr. Kathryn Louise (Merdian) Shaffer, 75, died peacefully on November 29, 2024, after a years-long battle with Parkinson’s disease. She was born on June 15, 1949, in Streator, IL. Kathy was preceded in death by her parents and sister Carol.
At age 46, Kathy completed and earned her PhD; an accomplishment she was very proud of. She retired in 2016 from a distinguished career in teaching and administration at Lansing Community College due to advancing Parkinson’s. She was among the first instructors to develop and teach online courses. Kathy was an avid Jazzerciser and when her Parkinson’s Disease no longer allowed that, she participated in ParkinDance, a movement/music program designed for those with Parkinson’s until COVID closed the program. She was also an avid reader, often reading multiple books per week. She dearly loved her cats, often putting their needs and well-being before her own.
Surviving to cherish her memory are sisters Betty Milthaler of Fremont, MI, Janice (Dennis) Hudson of Lansing, MI, and Sharon (John) Andersen of Center Line, MI; brother Craig (Lena) Merdian of Traverse City, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial Mass celebrating Kathy’s life will take place at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, on December 30th at 11:00 a.m. with visitation for one hour prior. In keeping with Kathy’s wishes, cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to: The Parkinson’s Foundation to continue their work to treat and improve the lives of those with Parkinson’s Disease or The Humane Society to honor Kathy’s love for her cats.
