Leonora H. Smith, age 77, of East Lansing, Michigan, left her family and friends on December 1, 2022, after a full life replete with interesting ideas and brilliant words. Leonora was born in Great Falls, Montana on June 29, 1945 to John C. Harris and Leonora W. Harris (née Jenkins). She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Roger B. Smith; her son John R Anderson from her first marriage to George L. Anderson of Middleport, NY; her granddaughter Jane-Marie Walker Anderson, and many relatives and friends.
Leonora grew up on a 150-horse farm and stable in Middleport, New York. Colonial Ridge Stables had one of the largest tack shops and riding stables in New York State. Leonora maintained her connection with the outdoors and nature throughout her life. She also loved her many pets, finding special comfort with Levi, the last cat in the family.
A graduate of Royalton-Hartland High School, Leonora earned her Bachelor’s Degree from State University of New York at Albany, and her Masters and PhD from Michigan State University.
Leonora was an emerita professor at Michigan State University, a scholar, a writer and performer of the creative arts, particularly poetry and fiction. Her many readings in Lansing, at Michigan State, and across the country at writing conferences drew enthusiastic fans. As one sister poet wrote, “I will never forget Leonora’s voice and the spirit behind it.” A mentor to many, her home became a salon for writers and writing groups who sought to share and improve their work. Leonora was a careful and compassionate listener who fostered new writers and encouraged seasoned ones, including her granddaughter Jane-Marie, who honed her craft with Leonora’s guidance. She also enjoyed wordplay, often completing the New York Times crossword puzzle in ink, and playing Wordle just for fun.
Leonora was the author of many works, including Spatial Relations, a collection of autobiographical reflections which causes her readers to reflect on their own lives as well.
Leonora had a deep connection to the ocean and the Laurentian Great Lakes. From her three-story cottage in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, affectionately known as The Treehouse, Leonora made a point of communing with nature as often as she could. An avowed thalassophile, Leonora could be found just down the coast at her favorite beach in Moran Township, Michigan. She also enjoyed food, seeking out local restaurants when she traveled, and trying new recipes. She was well known for her lemon meringue pie.
Leonora lived to change that which she could not accept, fought for her voice, and maintained a healthy posture of doubt when anyone told her, “this is the way things have to be.” Leonora cared deeply about justice.
The family will receive friends and family for an informal gathering on January 7, 2023, 1:00 - 4:00 PM at Gorsline Runciman East Chapel, 1730 East Grand River Ave., East Lansing, MI 48823.
At Leonora’s request, a gathering of friends and family for poetry and music will be held at a later date. There will be no funeral service.
The family would like to thank those who have provided positive energy and support during Leonora’s final months.
Donations in Leonora’s memory may be made to the creative group, humane organization, or library of your choice. To truly honor Leonora’s legacy, make art. No flowers, please.
