Loentine Virginia Goff

Born March 9, 1926, in Lansing, she was the daughter of William and Johanna Hanneman. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, John Beltz; her second husband, Dorset Goff; her daughter, Johnna Smith; son-in-law John Snyder; brother Carl Hanneman; sister-in-law Marcia Hanneman; grandson Jason Petrey; and great-grandson Austin Petrey.

She is survived by her daughter, Anna (Michael) Miller; son-in-law, Lamont Smith; stepdaughter, Ellen (Goff) Petrey; and stepson, Timothy Goff. Also surviving are her grandchildren: Elizabeth (Brandon) Parker, Laurna (Ryan) Taylor, John (Cathryn) Snyder, Emilia (Ian) Rosen, and Mary-Alexandra (Christopher) Carter; as well as Joseph (Jamie) Petrey, John (Brooke) Goff, Joellen Petrey and Charles Goff. She was also deeply delighted by her 19 great-grandchildren.

Loentine was a graduate of Eastern High School and Michigan State University, where she was a proud member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she was also a gifted hostess who made entertaining and nourishing her loved ones look effortless.

She enjoyed tennis, golf and skiing, and especially relished swimming in her beloved Walloon Lake in northern Michigan. A talented furniture refinisher and painter, she created countless works of art for her home and family. She played both piano and organ, accompanying English and German Sunday services for many years at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lansing, as well as weddings and funerals at People’s Church in East Lansing.

Loentine was known and adored for her sharp wit, dry humor, quiet grit, and timeless elegance—even in her final days. She remains a cherished matriarch to the generations of family who were fortunate to call her their own.
