Lourdes Galauran Anselmo died peacefully of natural causes on April 10, 2023 in Okemos, Michigan. She was born in Manila, Philippines on November 27, 1931 to Avelina Cerelo and Jose Vasquez, Sr. Following her mother’s untimely death while Lulu was still a young child, she and her four younger sisters were adopted by, and thrived under the loving care of, Constancia Santos and Amado Galauran.
Lulu attended Catholic primary and secondary schools in Dongalo, Paranaque. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila and embarked on what proved be a long and successful career as a public-health and hospital nurse.
She married Marciano Delfin Anselmo, with whom she had five children: Danilo (Fe), Aurora (Louis Anstett), Aristedes, Roberto, and Marcia (John Toivonen). In 1971 Lulu, her husband and their children emigrated to the United States, settling in Lansing, Michigan, where Lulu continued her nursing career at Sparrow Hospital’s Mother Baby Center until her retirement in 1995.
Lulu remained irrepressibly vivacious after retirement by, among other things, continuing to keep up with the latest fashion trends, doting on her grandchildren, traveling extensively and socializing with fellow Filipino-Americans in the greater Lansing area as well as with fellow retirees who learned to play the game of mahjong under Lulu’s tutelage at the Hannah Senior Center in East Lansing, Michigan.
Lulu was preceded in death by her natural and adoptive parents, sisters Gloria Ochoa, Amelita Almeda and Lolita Arevalo, brother Jose Vasquez, Jr., son Aristedes and grandson Andrew.
