Dear Chris--I was sorry to learn about the loss of your Mom--just yesterday.  She was a special lady who had a very successful career and worked hard in her last years to pass on her knowledge and experience to those who would carry on the work.  Many young scientists will benefit from having known and worked with her.  As a friend she was understanding, supportive and affirming and a true blessing.  She cared alot about you all. You know you have been a great son and Lucy was very proud of you. I just want to tell you that there are no words that can heal the loss of a Mom and it will hurt always.  However, God has gifted you with a Josephine who will keep you busy and give you strength to go on and soon you will start to  feel  that Lucy is in your heart, guiding you as well .
 I am remembering our chats in the kitchen about science and the difficulties we had to sort just for being a woman and you saying how strong she was. I miss her already you know? because I know she will not phone me anymore to check on me or invite me to visit her, but we have another angel that will be protecting us. You were very lucky to have such a Mom. She will be on my prayers as well as you and the rest of your family.

We want to express to you our deepest sympathy on this very sad occasion of passing away of your dearest mother Dr.Lucy Lee, whom we all shall miss very much. She was an outstanding human being, an accomplished scientist, a great friend and a loving mother and wife. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you, her closest relatives in this time of a deep sorrow. May she rest in peace. We shall forever remember her. She was truly a great lady! Dedicated to Lucy Lee.  

I first met Lucy when she got her doctorate.  Our husbands were friends and Joe invited Surjit and me over for the celebration.  We didn't see much of each other the years.  Then we retired and had lunch together almost every month. 

Our last lunch, this summer, was at Golden Wok.  She ate only half her soup!  She was small but the only time she did that was once when I insisted we go to someplace serving American food.  She ate half the hamburger.  So when she ate only half her soup I wondered if something was up.

My niece visited me for a month at the end of the summer so when Lucy phoned me I was remiss in calling her back thinking it was the usual call for  lunch.  How wrong I was!  

When we did connect she said she had been diagnosed with cancer, lymphoma, and it had spread throughout her body.  I asked if I could come visit her.  She said "No, all I do is sleep."

Your Mom has always had a special place in my heart. She was like family to me and to so many others.  I recently ran into a scholar who was in her lab and we recalled fondly the many years we spent in the basement of ADDL.  Lucy also helped me personally to understand the difficult professional balance of being a woman in science. She carried her struggles with grace and strength. I will always remember her and try to honor her memory by being even a small bit like her.

To Lucy's family 
I am very saddened by the passing of Lucy. I had the privilegie of knowing her as talented scientist ang good friend during 1968/70 by working at RPRL. We pray for her and keep deep good memories!

Lucy has been an inspiration and will continue to be. Not only professionally but first and foremost through her personal qualities. She has touched so many and always showed a commitment and love to others that still permeates our community. She will be sorely missed but, more importantly, remembered for what she has achieved and given us on so many different levels. It has been a privilege to know her and having her as a friend.

Dear Chris, as the other scientists working on Marek's disease, I am very saddened by the loss of Lucy. She has contributed a lot and nicely on the progress of our knowledge on this disease. She will be remembered since we are frequently using tools (monoclonal antibodies) that she developed and that are critical for our daily work on these viruses. If I had to describe her in 4 words, I would use the French expression: "Quelqu'un de bien".

As you grieve the loss of your beloved mom, I want to let you know that we all feel very privileged and fortunate to have known her as a loving friend, wonderful and caring human being and a highly respected colleague who was a true inspiration for us.

I offer my heartfelt condolences for the grief to you and your family at the passing of your grandmother, Lucy. In her scientific life, she was grandmother and mother to many of us. She was a very gracious, supportive, helpful and kind colleague and mentor, and she will be missed around this world by people you may never know or get to meet. She touched many lives in very personal and profound ways and I feel privileged to have called her friend and colleague. She always responded to my emails, but usually would call me directly and it was always so good to hear her voice and to share with her ideas and projects. Hopefully, the outpouring from her friends and the scientific community that was her professional "family" will help you in this time of grief. Dear Chris, as you grieve the loss of your beloved mom, I hope that you continue finding strength and peace in knowing that your mom is now with your dad, that she is now pain-free, that you loved her so much, that you cared  for her including carrying her up and downstairs during her chemo treatment, getting her home as she wished, attending at her bedside for countless hours including multiple hours the night before her passing, and that you were with her when she took the final breath.
