Marian (Nauman) Macbeth, nee Siess, passed away August 28, 2021 at the age of 93 in Lansing, Michigan. Marian was born on June 10, 1928 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, to American parents, the Rev. C.H. (Clarence) and Marie (Dau) Siess.
Marian graduated from St. Clair (Michigan) High School in 1946, earned a nursing degree from the University of Michigan School of Nursing in 1950 and spent her first years of nursing at the University of Michigan Hospital. With her first husband, John D. Nauman, Marian moved to Elyria, Ohio in 1964, where she raised her family and worked in various disciplines in the nursing field at Elyria Memorial Hospital. She spent 42 years as a registered nurse, ending her career as head nurse of oncology at Elyria Memorial Hospital, from which she retired in 1992.
Marian lived in Elyria for 28 years before marrying her second husband, Donald Macbeth, moving to North Ridgeville, Ohio in 1992. She was an active member of The First Congregational Church in Elyria where she sang in the choir, served on the Board of Christian Education, the Board of Trustees and the Diaconate, was a member of the Heights Circle, edited the monthly Courier, and volunteered as an office receptionist. She was also a member of the U of M Alumni Association and a past member and past president of the American Businesswomen’s Association.
Although only related to her son-in-law’s family by marriage, Marian was a much-loved member of the Allan family of Elyria, considered them her family, and was referred to collectively as “our mother-in-law” by them.
An avid hiker and traveler, Marian enjoyed the sites of many places throughout the world, including California, Minnesota, U.S. National Parks, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, India, Great Britain, and Europe.
Independence Village of East Lansing (Michigan) became Marian’s home in 2017 where she moved to be near her daughter and son-in-law. The years she lived there were happily spent playing bridge and pinochle, reading, watching movies, socializing, attending services at University Lutheran Church in East Lansing, and becoming an integral part of her daughter’s circle of friends.
A happy, nurturing, unflappable, and progressive woman, Marian saw the good in people and found joy in the company of others. She maintained a wonderful sense of humor, and until the end of her life stayed deeply engaged in the important issues of our time, retaining a positive and hopeful outlook.
Marian is survived by her three children; Kim N. Allan (Jon) of East Lansing, Michigan, David J. Nauman (Anita) of Columbus, Ohio, Stephen R. Nauman (Debbie) of San Diego, California; six grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
Marian is preceded in death by her parents, her first husband John D. Nauman in 1987, her second husband Donald Macbeth, and her brothers Kenneth J. Siess (Ellie) of Saint Paul, Minnesota and Thomas F. Siess (Anne) of London Ontario, Canada.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Marian’s memory to The Greater Lansing Food bank.
