

Marilyn Jane Amey, a beloved mother, wife, sister, and esteemed educator, passed away on November 5, 2025, in Lansing, Michigan. Born on November 29, 1957 in Summit, New Jersey to parents William and Marilyn Jane Amey. Her life was a testament to her unwavering dedication to education, family, and community.
Marilyn’s passion for learning led her to pursue a career in higher education. After completing her undergraduate studies at Wittenberg University, she went on to earn a master’s degree from Ohio State University and a doctorate from Pennsylvania State University. It was at Penn State where she met the love of her life, Dennis Brown. The two were married on November 19, 1988, creating a partnership filled with love that lasted nearly 37 years.
Dr. Amey’s professional career was marked by her commitment to higher education. She began teaching at the University of Kansas before joining Michigan State University, where she became a professor and chair of the Department of Educational Administration. Her impact on students and colleagues alike was profound, and showcased her commitment to shaping the future of higher education. She also served as the Interim Assistant Provost for Faculty and Academic Staff Development, a role that highlighted her leadership and dedication to educational excellence.
Marilyn was also deeply involved in various professional organizations, including the Association for the Study of Higher Education, National Association of Student Personal Administrators and the American Association of Community Colleges. She contributed her expertise as an editor for the Community College Review and earned the prestigious Robert H. Shaffer Award for Academic Excellence from MSU. Marilyn also coauthored and edited numerous books and articles in the field of Higher Education.
Dr. Amey’s legacy extends far beyond her professional accomplishments. She was a nurturing mother to her two daughters, Caitlin and Megan Brown, who were her pride and joy. Alongside Dennis, Marilyn created a warm and loving home, where cherished memories were made. She is survived by her husband Dennis, her daughters Caitlin and Megan, and her siblings, Allyson (Bob) White, William (Angelina) Amey, Bruce (Diane) Amey, Bart (Junetta) Amey, and Carolyn (Mark) Nichwitz. Marilyn also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, and nephews who will hold her memory dearly.
As a community member, Marilyn was always eager to give back. Her heart for education and her belief in the power of knowledge led her to establish the Marilyn J. Amey Scholarship Endowment Fund, ensuring that future generations could pursue their educational dreams.
