Beloved Mother, Sister, Friend Grandmother, Godmother and Wife passed away suddenly early Monday, October 3rd, 2011. She was born In Lansing, Michigan to Ann and Jack I. Green on March 9th, 1946. Martha; Mart, Marty, or Marta to her friends; attended East Lansing High School, class of 1963. She attended both MSU and U of M with a focus on history. Her love of learning was a life-long passion and she had boundless interest in everything from String Theory to Mycology. Martha was an avid reader and writer, never traveling anywhere without a huge basket of books, both fiction and reference, as “you never knew what you might need”.
Martha was a great lover of the woods and water, She was most happy when being on the shores of Lake Superior, listening to the waves and the wind, and searching for rocks. She had an adventurous spirit and loved the wonderful, odd world in which we live. She was able to find humor in any moment and was a joy to those around her.
Martha was very politically active for most of her life. She spent several years in the 60’s working in minority communities with VISTA and worked on numerous political campaigns including Anderson, Tsongas, and most recently Obama. She spent thousands of hours circulating petitions, registering people to vote, and driving people to voting stations on Election Day. Most notable is her work with March for Justice and The Rev. Lester Stone.
She will be greatly missed by her children, Jessamy Green-Husted (Todd Meder), and Sebastian Green-Husted, her husband Bob Husted, and her grandson Dimitri Meder, who was the light of her life. Also devastated by her loss are her brother Tom Green (Suzanne Green) of North Carolina and Judith Johnson (Eddie Landa) of Maryland, and numerous friends whose lives she has profoundly changed and enhanced.
The memorial will be held on Saturday October 15th at 3pm. In lieu of flowers please send donations to either Heifer International at www.heifer.org or Impressions 5 Science Museum, 200 Museum Dr, Ste 105, Lansing, MI, 48933 in Martha’s memory.
