East Lansing
Born February 16, 1931, in Mt. Vernon, New York to C. Lloyd and Mary Benson Jackson, passed away December 17, 2012 at the age of 81. Mary held a Bachelor’s Degree in History from Goucher College and a Master’s in Library Sciences from the University of Michigan. While attending U of M she met her husband Harold “Hal” Currie. Mary was a stay-at-home mother to 4 active, rowdy boys. After her boys were in school she worked on the Lansing Bookmobile as a librarian and was a librarian in the Rare Books Room at Yale University. She was proud that her grandfather, Allan L. Benson, ran for President of the United State in 1916, and was the author of numerous books.
Mary loved spending time with her family. She cherished the time when her four son and their families were together talking, laughing and picking on each other. She loved to sing and enjoyed going to sing-a-longs at area nursing homes. Mary also loved flowers and traveling. She was an avid gardener in her earlier years and always liked to have flowers around. Mary traveled to Europe (where she met some relatives in Switzerland), Hawaii and Canada. She belonged to several bridge clubs.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, and her husband of 31 years, Harold. She is survived by her sons, Brad (Theresa), Ben (Vonnie), Bruce (Alice) and Brian (Mary) Currie; 6 grandchildren, Josh (Brooke), Matthew, Kevin (Sarah), Jackson, Allan (Allison) and Daniel; 3 great-grandchildren, Rebekah, Owen, and Jude; brother, L. Brewster (Elizabeth) Jackson and niece Julia Gwyn Jackson.
The family would like to thank Independence Village of East Lansing, Care Solutions caregivers, and Hospice Advantage for taking such good care of our mother in recent months.
A memorial service will be held Friday, December 21, at 11:00 a.m. at Cedar Street Church, 1705 Cedar Street, Holt, MI 48842. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a contribution to the American Cancer Society, 1755 Abbey Rd, East Lansing, MI 48823 in Mary’s memory.
