OBITUARY

Matthew Michael Guilfoyle

July 4, 1944January 15, 2021

Matthew Michael Guilfoyle passed away on Friday, January 15, 2021 in his Lansing home with his loving wife Kathleen by his side following a courageous 21-year battle with significant health issues. Matthew was born a proud Irishman on July 4, 1944 in Kentucky. Matthew was a dedicated Marine serving in the Vietnam War and ending his tour of duty receiving multiple military awards and citations including several Purple Hearts. On April 11, 1970 he married the love of his life, Kathleen. Matthew was a loving husband, father, grandfather “Backa”, brother, uncle, and friend. He devoted 48 years to Food Distribution retiring as Meat Manager. Matthew was a proud man who deeply loved his family, a devout Catholic always holding true to his faith in God, and a proud American always willing to support his country. He had a heart of gold and loved welcoming new people into his life and never stopped providing to those in need.

He loved traveling, playing golf, sitting outside while listening to music, watching birds, playing cards, talking, telling stories, cooking/grilling, and most importantly being with the people he loved. It might have been his sharp wit and candid humor that endeared him to many. Children, his own and others, eagerly found joy in his impish ways and tendency to always instigate something fun. He loved listening to the rain and made it known that it was his wish to be buried on a rainy day. Although it may not rain on the day he is laid to rest, there will be an abundance of tears in everyone’s eyes to create his desired rainstorm. He will be deeply missed by all that had the honor of knowing and loving him. His legacy lives on in the hearts and memories of: Kathleen M. Kroeger Guilfoyle (wife of 51 years), his 4 children; Rebecca Naert (David), Matthew (Margi), Mark, and Randy (Kacy); his 5 grandchildren Evelyn & Mallory Guilfoyle, and Katelyn, Jake, and Matthew Naert; his 3 sisters Janet Boyers (William), Martha Hobing (Michael-deceased), and Dorothy Jean Boyers (Edward), and many extended family and friends. Matthew joins his parents John and Dorothy (McElfresh) Guilfoyle in our Father’s heavenly kingdom.

The Funeral Mass will be held Friday, March 12 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 411 E. Second Street, Dayton, OH 45402. The family will receive guests one hour prior at the church.

Burial will follow at Dayton National Cemetery.

Those desiring may make contributions to the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Cincinnati Chapter 156, 5413-B&C, Springfield, VA 22151-3960.

Rest in peace Matthew… until we meet again. Irish eyes are smiling!

I was a Marine Brother of Matt (Gunny). I served with him in 1st Bn. 9th Marines and also 3rd Bn. 26th Marines in Viet Nam in 1967. He was a great Marine that could always be depended on to 'have your back'. We had many experiences, both good and bad, during 1967, It was an honor to have served with him. I was deeply moved when his loving wife informed me Matt had passed away. He is gone but not forgotten. I will always think of him on those "special dates" which we shared in Vietnam. Go and rest on that mountain Gunny. Your 'Tour of duty' is completed. We'll carry the flag on from this point.
Your friend and fellow Marine

Matthew Guilfoyle the best boy from Bracken County, Kentucky. I was lucky to marry his little sister. The family lost their father at an early age and Matt was like a father to his sisters. He was a brother to his brother-in-laws. Bigger than life, Matt will truly be missed. He was so loved by all.

My deepest sympathy to the Guilfoyle family. Matthew was a great friend, colleague and person. Matt always had a great sense of humor and always enjoyed a great ribbing to all of his friends. I know my Dad and Mom loved Matt and appreciated all he has done for my family. My Dad considered Matt one his best friends, both enjoying a laugh, golf and working in business. I will always appreciate how Matt mentored me in business and always made sure he shared every insight into all the workings of the grocery industry. Matt and Cathy have given me and my Mom so much support after my Dad passed, both have been a blessing from God. Rest In Peace my friend.
