Auntie Mattie! 

Thank you so much for always being there for our family and always showing support. I still remember every year for my birthday you would send the exact dollar amount per age I was turning every year. It really meant so much. I love and miss you! 

Cousin Mattie!

I'm going to miss your radiant smile that illuminates the joy in which you beheld so dear for all of us.  You took on such a monumental task researching our family tree; and, for that, you brought a light to our past.  Now, I can proudly say without a doubt that my great-great-grandfather was an African...Our one and only Genealogist, Mattie (Jackson) Brooks....

You were chosen to shine a light on our ancestor's journey
And that you did with all your might
We will forever be so grateful for your insight

I was nine years old when Mattie came into my life.  She married my brother James and they gave our family the first and most beautiful granddaughter and 
niece, Donna Janene.
At the age of ten, I spent a wonderful 
week with the Jackson family and was 
overjoyed when Mattie took me 
shopping at J L Hudson Department 
Store to buy a dress.  After trying  on
three or four dresses, I chose one with a 
detachable pinafore.  For many years  I
cherished the dress and the day spent
with Mattie.  
In my early teens she gave me her 
wooden dressing table and chair.  A
3-way movable mirror was part of the 
ensemble.  The table was surrounded by 
a removable red, white and checkered 
gingham skirt.  I took pride in cleaning
the wood, washing, starching and
ironing the fabric.   While sitting at 
Mattie's dressing table I created many 
hairstyles by turning and adjusting that 
3-way mirror!
Although, the years have fleeted by and
now her spirit has taken flight, it is with
fond remembrance to recount Mattie's
beautiful smile, unique laughter and
most of all her kindness!
Truly, she had a selfless, giving nature.
To Donna and the Hrcka family, Clara
and the McCann and Jackson families,
sincere condolences are being sent on
behalf of the Tomlinson, Hardin and
Gamby families.  We are praying that 
God gives you strength, solace and
peace at this difficult time.
May you, too, have a wealth of fond
memories when you think of Mattie.
You remain in our thoughts and prayers.







Aunt Mattie - you will be missed. I'll always remember your laugh. It was infectious.  You were always right to the point but you were also very kind and caring. My condolences to Donna, you remain in my thoughts and prayers.

Donna, so sorry to hear about Mattie. My prayers are with you.  So glad to have known Mattie from working at the  state of michigan. Please know that she is still watching over you from above.

We only knew Auntie Mat for a short time but to know her was to love her.  

Auntie Mat - thank you for always being there for me. I'll always remember your decisiveness and healthy dose of skepticism! Whenever I was in a jam, you were always there, ready to help! I will miss you so much. Love, Jennifer

My mother was a very strong and independent woman. She had an unshakable strength that saw her through many of the challenges in her life. She passed that strength along to me — to believe in myself, be respectful of others, and always stand up for what I believe. She taught me to be independent and stressed the importance of  taking care of myself without the reliance of others.

My mother was a no-nonsense, take-charge person who didn’t stand for any type of injustice. She firmly believed in treating people the way she wished to be treated — with kindness and respect.

My mother was a very caring and compassionate woman. If someone needed help, she was always there to lend a helping hand. It never mattered if you were a stranger, friend, or relative — my mother would always do what she could to help out in any situation. She was always appreciative of others who came to her assistance in times of need and repaid them in kindness.

My mother held a strong faith in God. She believed in His will and answered his call when the time came for her to leave us. She will be missed as she left a lasting impression on so many. We have been so fortunate to have benefited from her love, strength, and compassion.

My Mother-in-law will be dearly missed. From her engaging bright smile, to her stinging hot chili. It has been my pleasure to be her son-in-law. She trusted me to repair various projects around her home, as well as the care of her daughter Donna. I am so happy for Mattie, as she peacefully continues her journey. Chat with you later, Mattie.
