Merrick "Rick" A. Richardson

June 17, 1943September 8, 2018

Merrick Abner Richardson, known to everyone as Rick, passed away in East Lansing, Michigan on September 8, 2018. He was 75. He leaves his wife, Susan; sons, Merrick Allen and wife, Toni; son, Mark Andrew and wife, Julie; daughter, Sera Mills; grandsons, Merrick Anthony and Michael Allen and his sister, Karen Roenisch.

Rick was born in Chicago and grew up in the nearby suburb of River Forest, graduating from Oak Park and River Forest High School. He came to East Lansing to study accounting at Michigan State University, and there, he met the love of his life, Susan (née Rogers). They were married in 1966.

In 1971, Rick and fellow CPA David Layton opened Layton & Richardson, P.C., an accounting firm still going strong 47 years later. Rick loved his work and was a fixture in the Greater Lansing business community, serving on the boards of several local charities. He retired in 2013.

Rick enjoyed a cold beer and a good laugh, and was an avid tennis player with a powerful first serve. He was a lifelong outdoorsman and a diehard fan of Michigan State sports. On any given Saturday each Fall, he could usually be found walking alongside the MSU Marching Band across the Red Cedar, on his way to Spartan Stadium.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, September 22 at 1 pm in the Lake Huron Room on the 3rd Floor of the MSU Union, located at 49 Abbot Road, East Lansing.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research

The family is being served by Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home, East Chapel, East Lansing.

Rick was a great person. I have fond memories from the years he did our taxes. He had a good sense of humor.

Prayers and thoughts for his family

When I first met Rick I recognized what a bright and kind person he was. He was fun, too. We shared a love for the outdoors. I will miss him.

My thoughts are with Sue, Sera, Rick and Toni, Mark and Julie and of course his grandsons, Merrick and Michael.

Love to you all,

For 50 plus years, Rick and I have been friends. He was someone you just had to like. When we got together, it was like we hadn’t been apart and we took up right where we left off the last time we were together.
I will miss him.
My deepest condolences to his family.

Sue, Merrick, Mark & Sarah;

My thoughts and Prayers go out to each of you and your families.

I enjoyed working with and my relationship with Rick for approximately 30 years.

Rick and I had a lot of good experiences together at Granger's over the years that I worked with Rick and his staff at Layton Richardson.

Rick was genuine and someone I would liked to have known earlier in my career.

I am so thankful that Sally Swaray, Rick's night care giver, told us where he was.
My brother Alton & I had a meaningful visit about 2 weeks ago.
When we first started visiting he was very confused, BUT when we talked about years ago he was with it!
Rick recalled when we met & who was present. (this was about 50 years ago)
Sue, our hearts go out to you Merrick, Mark & Sarah.
With our love,
Ron Granger
