Art Garmon, 76, of Haslett, Michigan, passed away on November 28, 2024. He was a beloved husband, stepfather, grandfather, brother, professor, and researcher, known for his quiet nature, dedication to learning, and love of routine.
Art was born in Jackson, Tennessee and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He went on to pursue his higher education at Western Michigan University, where he earned his undergraduate degree, followed by a Ph.D. from Michigan State University, where he became an ardent supporter of the Spartans (Go Spartans!). His career as an educator spanned many years, including teaching at South Haven High School and later at Western Michigan University, where he imparted his knowledge of Educational Psychology to countless students.
A true intellectual, Art was a passionate researcher, always diving deep into the world of computers and the internet, seeking new knowledge and exploring new topics with an insatiable curiosity. He was known as the epitome of a computer nerd, often getting lost in "rabbit holes" of research. His love for technology was matched only by his appreciation for privacy, structure, and routine—principles that guided his personal and professional life.
Art will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 18 years, Deborah; his stepchildren Anna Johnson and Ryan Kloak; his grandchildren Sylvia, Tru, and Kendall; and his siblings Bill and Marla Garmon, Cynthia Garmon, Linda and George Stapleton, Gwendolyn Garmon, Bruce and Carla Garmon, and Karen Garmon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Moses and Ada Brooks.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the hospice staff for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan.
Art’s legacy of love for learning, his dedication to his family, and his unique quiet wisdom will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A visitation for Moses will be held Thursday, December 5, 2024 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 East Grand River Ave, East Lansing, MI 48823, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM.
