

Mulugeta Engeda Assefa,72, of Washington, DC died at George Washington University hospital of decompensated congestive heart failure, Pneumonia, and severe aortic stenosis on July 29, 2026.
He was born in Ethiopia on July 06, 1954 to Assefa Engeda Mersha, and Yezabnesh Alemu Eyasu. Mulugeta attended Teferi Mekonen High School and proceeded to college at Haile Selassie I University in Addis Ababa in 1972 for one year. He pursued and completed his education at the Ecole Normale Superior de France in Addis Ababa in 1974. Mulugeta taught at Morning Star Elementary School in Addis Ababa gaining the reputation of most popular English teacher. He later changed course to pursue his passion of defending democracy by joining the popular Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Party (EPRP) at Assimba, Tigrai. In 1982, he moved to the United States and lived briefly in Los Angeles, California. He later joined his elder brother residing in East Lansing, Michigan in 1987 and pursued his education further in Avionics at Lansing Community College. In 1989, he moved to Washington, DC working as a Security Officer until his death in 2026.
Mulugeta was preceded in death by our mother Yezabnesh Alemu Eyasu, our father Assefa Engeda Mersha and two siblings Friewoyn and Yirgaalem. He is survived by his six siblings (elder sister Banchiamlak Assefa), two younger sisters (Yeshareg Assefa and Messeret Assefa) an older brother (Imru Assefa) and two younger brothers (Tewodros Assefa and Fikru Assefa).
Solemn prayer of absolution and requiem memorial service will be performed for the deceased on Friday, August 07, 2026 from 10:00 AM EST at St Gabriel EOTC located at 2710 N. Grand River Ave, Lansing, MI 48906, followed by burial services on Friday, August 07, 2026 at Glendale cemetery located at 1730 E Grand River Ave, East Lansing, MI 48823.
