Dr. Neil O. Snepp, age 86, passed from this earth in the company of his family October 11, 2013 following a yearlong battle with cancer. He was born December 26, 1926 in New Paris, Ohio to Virgil and Virginia (Steadman) Snepp. He received his Bachelors, Masters, and PhD degrees from Ohio State University and was an avid lifelong Buckeye fan. He held many different professional positions at Michigan State University including Assistant Professor of Agriculture Education, Counselor for Veteran Affairs, and Personnel Specialist, retiring in 1989. Dr. Snepp was also a veteran, honorably serving in WWII and Korea. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps as a Colonel in 1981 after serving for over 40 years. Neil was an Elder Emeritus of University Christian Church in East Lansing, MI where he was a member for 46 years. After retirement, Neil became an avid rock and fossil collector. Education was his passion and he shared his geologic knowledge volunteering in various local school classrooms as well as Boy Scout badge programs. His community involvements included past member of the East Lansing Rotary Club, current member of the Okemos Masonic Lodge, Okemos Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star, member of the Central Michigan Lapidary and Mineral Society of which he was Past President, member of the Midwest Federation of Mineralogical and Geological Societies of which he was Past President, member of the Military Officers Association of America, member of the Marine Corps League, and a member of Sojourners. Neil lived a full and active life.
Neil was preceded in death by his first wife of over 50 years, Connie J. Snepp, in 2007. In 2009, God sent him an angel in the form of Norma Kremke whom he married July 24, 2010. She was a loving and fun loving companion, cared for him throughout his illness, and survives him. Neil is survived by four brothers and one sister; Paul (Sylvia) Snepp, Hugh (Laurel) Snepp, Dale Snepp, Dean (Marcia) Snepp and Bonnie (Gerry) Greene, two children; Jeri Johnson (Steven Wagner) of DeWitt, MI, and Neil M. (Danitza) Snepp of Katy, Texas, 4 grandchildren; Jennifer (Matt) Davis of Charlotte, MI, David (Allison) Johnson of Orchard Lake, MI, Jacqueline Rodriguez of Katy, Texas and Joshua Johnson of DeWitt, MI, one great-granddaughter, Alaina Solitro of Charlotte, MI. Neil is also survived by 5 step-children; Pamela (Mike) Cappella, Melissa (Don) Hutchens, Martin (Jenneva) Kremke, Tricia Hilgendorf, and Joel (Donelle) Kremke; numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
Neil was a man of integrity, faith and strength. His love of life and sense of humor will be greatly missed by all whose lives crossed his path.
The family is being served by Gorsline Runciman, 1730 East Grand River Ave., East Lansing, MI. Visitation will be held Friday, October 18 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at University Christian Church, 310 N. Hagadorn Rd., East Lansing, MI on Saturday, October 19 at 11:00 a.m. Please allow for game day traffic. A luncheon will be held following the service at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 5589 VanAtta Rd., Haslett, MI Interment with military honors will be held at 3:00 p.m. at Glendale Cemetery, 2500 Mt. Hope Rd., Okemos, MI.
