Richard "Rick" Bernsten, 80, of East Lansing, Michigan, died on October 30, 2025. Born February 11, 1945, he was the son of Lillian and Forest Bernsten. He received a B.A. from American University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. While serving in the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone, West Africa, he met and married Janice Graham in 1969—the beginning of a lifetime of work and friendship with people from around the world. Rick and Jan welcomed friends and strangers alike into their home with warmth, generosity, and delicious meals.
Rick and Jan and their family lived and worked in Sweden, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Arkansas, before settling in East Lansing in 1985. Rick served in the Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics at Michigan State University from 1985 - 2011. He taught international development courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels and found great joy in advising international graduate students. He served on several boards including Haven House, a temporary shelter for homeless families and Mystic Lake YMCA Camp. He also served for many years as the head of building and grounds for Edgewood United Church, organized vegetable garden donations, and coordinated weekly meetings of the ROMEOs, bringing retirees together for fellowship.
Rick tried to find something in common with everyone he met. He enjoyed connecting people with similar interests and helping others, whether he was fixing a broken table leg or lending his tiller to someone to put in a new garden. Rick was a great husband, son, father, uncle, and grandfather and shared his love of gardening, magic, popsicles, fishing, quirky hats, and crafts like candle-making, kite-building, and maple syrup tapping.
Rick is survived by his wife, Jan; two daughters, Suzanne (Saulo Gouveia) and Christine (Jason Edwards); and four grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Edgewood United Church, 469 N Hagadorn Rd., East Lansing, MI 48823, Haven House, 121 Whitehills Dr., East Lansing, MI 48823, or Heifer Project https://www.heifer.org
