Robert was born to Clarence and Dorothy Pethers, April 7, 1936, in Flint, Michigan. He graduated from Redford Union High School in 1954.
Bob played semi-pro baseball in Japan for 2 years. Soon after he finished playing ball, he joined the United States Air Force where he served four years. He began a career with General Motors in 1960 and enjoyed a 33 year career holding several management positions during his time. After his retirement from GM he moved to California for 11 years and then spent time in New Jersey for 9 years.
Bob made great friends wherever he went, including in the greater Lansing area over the past five years as an avid part of the Meridian division of the Mall Walkers of America and the International McDonald’s Breakfast Club.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Dorothy Pethers; his first wife, Vivian Olivia and his second wife, Sharon Arlene.
Robert is survived by his children, Janice (Blaine) Hopkins, Robert Pethers, Jr., Lori (Joel) Greenberg, Jeff (Renee) Lightford and Leslie Eastham; his grandchildren, Dustin (Ashley) Hopkins, Chris (Bailie) Hopkins, Taylor (Shannon) Hopkins, Scott (Crystal) Hawkins, Alina (Derek) Lynch, Courtney (Zack) Pethers, Alicia Pethers, Megan, Lindsay, Hannah and Matthew Greenberg, Alexandria, Jacob and Joshua Lightford; great-grandchildren, Lucy and Georgia Hopkins, Aubrey, Cameron and Gracie Hawkins, Damien and Dominik Lynch, Maddi and Mia; and special friend, Marilyn Bowker.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held Sunday, December 9, 1 p.m., Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 East Grand River Avenue, East Lansing, with visitation one hour prior.
Funeral attire is to be casual. Feel free to come in khakis and polos.
