Age 68, died February 26, 2011. Our beloved Robert passed following a brave battle with cancer.
Robert was born December 6th 1942 to Percy and Grace (Hilliard) Powers in Lansing, Michigan.
Robert was in the National Guard from 1961-68. He was deployed during the Detroit Riots. Robert was the national advertising manager for the Lansing State Journal and retired after 38 years. He was an active member at the South Lansing Church of Christ for many years. Most recently, he and his wife became members of Asbury United Methodist in Lansing. Robert also gave 10 years of volunteer service to the Ingham County Meals on Wheels.
He is survived by his beautiful “Bitsy”, Sherry Powers. Robert and Sherry were teenage sweethearts. Sherry was 14 and Robert was 15 when they started their beautiful relationship which lasted 53 years, 46 of those years were spent married. He is also survived by his daughter Lori and husband Jeff of Chesterfield Twp; son Ryan Powers and his wife Nichole of Owosso; and grandchildren Liam, Owen, Ava, and Maggie-Grace; sisters-in-law, Jeanne Powers, Renee (Mark) Olance, Lynn (Duane) Eubanks; nephews, Doug Powers, Scott Powers, and Josh (Hillary) Olance; nieces, Beth (John) Belfiglio, Courtney (Deryl) Garland, and Ashley Olance. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Richard, and grandson Max.
Special thanks to Dr. Richard Berri and the oncology staff of 6 North, St. John Hospital, Detroit, MI, who took such wonderful care of Bob.
A Service of Death and Resurrection will be held at Asbury United Methodist Church, 2200 Lake Lansing Rd., Lansing on Wednesday, March 2, 20011 at 1 P.M., with Rev. Martin DeBow officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing. The family will receive friends at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M., and on Wednesday at the church one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions are suggested to Asbury United Methodist Church.
