

Robert (Bob) Steinman was born September 2, 1947, the oldest child of Robert Steinman and Irene Steinman (Swackhammer) of Port Austin, Michigan. Bob was preceded in death by his wife Colleen Steinman, his mother Irene Steinman, his father Robert Steinman and his nephew in law, Sebastian Morel-Ferreira. Bob is survived by his wife, Diana Steinman, sons by marriage: Andre Augustyniak, Matt Colloton and grandson, Elijah Augustyniak; siblings Bill Steinman (Linda) of Bath Township, MI, Jan Horetski (Dan) of Tuscon, AZ, Dave Steinman (Lisa) of Ferndale, MI, Brenda Jimpkoski (Dale) of Port Austin, MI, Brian Steinman of Howell, MI and the Goretski family. Bob is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. Port Austin High School in 1965 and from Michigan State University in 1969. He began his career in the U.S. Army as a social worker/psychology specialist in the stockades in Ft. McPherson and Ft. Gordon, GA. Bob returned to Michigan to become a prison counselor/senior counselor, probation/parole officer with the Michigan Department of Corrections from 1972-1977. During that time, he earned a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling from Michigan State University in 1973 and his juris doctorate from Thomas M. Cooley Law School, Lansing, MI. He passed the bar in 1978.
Bob had a long public service career in the Michigan legal system, including private law practice in St. Johns, MI, the Governor’s Office, and the Michigan Department of Corrections, from which he retired as Deputy Director, Field Operations Administration in 2002. He served as deputy legal counsel, Office of the Governor in 1991, Assistant Majority Counsel and Counsel to the Senate Criminal Justice and Urban Affairs, for the Michigan State Senate from 1985-1991.
Bob also volunteered as a foster parent, Clinton-Eaton-Ingham County Community Health Board of Directors, Hospice, Special Olympics, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and as Eucharistic Minister for Catholic Community of St. Jude. He served on both the Dewitt Township Planning Commission and the Clinton County Board of Commissioners. After retirement, Bob worked as an assistant player at Eagle Eye and Hawk Hollow Golf Course.
Bob loved life and every moment he was in this world. He was a loving husband, brother, grandfather, uncle, great-uncle, and friend to so many. He was a lifelong golfer, avid skier, and traveler. Bob was best known for his quick wit, getting straight to the point, upturned collar on his polo shirts, and ability to make people laugh.
A funeral mass will take place at St Martha’s Catholic Church, 1100 W Grand River Ave, Okemos, MI 48864 on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at 11 AM, with a visitation starting at 10:30 AM.
