Dr. Saiid Mahjoory of Okemos, Michigan, passed away September 23, 2020. Born in Tabriz, Iran, Dr. Mahjoory completed his undergraduate studies at Atatürk University in Turkey and received his Masters and PhD from Michigan State University.
Dr. Mahjoory began his career as a research scientist at the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan and moved on to the Department of Resource Development at Michigan State University. From 1985 until he retired, Dr. Mahjoory started the work he truly loved, teaching and mentoring diverse young people as a professor and academic advisor at Lansing Community College, guiding hundreds of students from over 70 countries.
Dr. Mahjoory served as director of Lansing Community College’s Howell Center in Livingston County for five years. Under his leadership, the Howell Center offered more than 60 courses to a student population that almost tripled from 400 to 1,100 students. Dr. Mahjoory touched the lives of many of his students, and the same attributes that drove him to educate and mentor will be missed by his countless friends, family and relatives. He could always be counted on to light up a room with his smile and wit. He loved to entertain and host family and friends frequently with a warmth and generosity of spirits that made all feel welcome and at home. We will never forget our beloved Saiid’s kebab and we know he is smiling at us now, knowing full well that not a single one of us ever figured out secret ingredient to his recipe. His memory is forever lovingly etched in our heart and souls.
Dr. Mahjoory is survived by his wife, Hosny; two children, Arastou and wife Terry; and Amy and husband Sean; five grandchildren, two brothers, two sisters, nieces, nephews and their families, as well as many special friends.
