Spencer Fortin, 68, passed away on March 23, 2021, in Lansing, Michigan, after a long and courageous fight against lung disease and other illness. Burial will be at East Lawn Memory Garden in Okemos, Michigan.
Spencer was born in Detroit, Michigan, on October 2, 1952. When he was 11, he was struck by a car while walking and near death. Against the odds, he survived, and through strength of will he persevered over disabilities to graduate with a bachelor’s degree from Wayne State University. He spent most of his adult life in Royal Oak, Michigan, attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, swam a mile nearly every day at the YMCA, and worked as an electronic technician and in retail sales. Reading was a favorite pastime. He recently donated several hundred of his books to the Haslett public library. He read two or three newspapers every day plus various magazines. He was always clipping articles, sending them to friends and family. He was ready to strike up conversation with anyone and was always interested in finding out others’ thoughts.
Spencer is preceded in death by his mother, Beatrice Fortin, and father, Errol Fortin. Spencer is survived by his brother, Neal Fortin (Kathy), a niece, Helen Fortin, and numerous extended family members.
