On December 31, 2013, Sue Hinshon, age 64, died peacefully on her birthday surrounded by her family, after a short but intense bout with lung cancer and associated complications.
She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Dick; her two children, Said Bin Yunus (Aimee Guillot) and Christie (Steven) McPharlin; two grandchildren Finnegan McPharlin and Zaynab Bin Yunus; as well as her mother, Mary Porte and five brothers and sisters, Dick (Elizabeth) Porte, Dennis Porte, Michael Porte, Patti McGraw and Julie (Mark) Vega. She was preceded in death by her father Lawrence Porte.
She was a dynamic, inspiring person whose warmth and sincerity gave her a unique ability to connect deeply with many diverse people. She had a heart that was bursting with empathy and compassion, along with the wisdom and insight that allowed her to positively influence the lives of those around her.
She was a graduate of Dearborn Sacred Heart High School, Henry Ford Community College Nursing Program, and Central Michigan University. She worked as the head nurse of the Ingham Medical Center Pediatric Intensive Care unit, and at the Family Medicine Clinic. She was a creative and passionate artist who specialized in fabric art and beaded objects. She traveled the globe to many different cultures in developing countries where she made personal connections with the local artists. Her creative pursuits included a 10 year involvement with the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market as liaison for artisits and craftsmen from Uzbekistan.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 4, 10:00 a.m. at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing. Visitation will be held Friday, January 3, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lansing Women’s Center, 1710 E.
