Timothy David Knight East Lansing

Timothy David Knight, 63, of East Lansing died the morning of August 7, 2012 after a long and difficult fight with cancer. Tim was preceded in death by his father David Knight. He is survived by his mother, Dorothy Knight, and sister, Susan (Ed) of Cass City; nephews, Matt, Nick, Jeff and Jarod; and long-time partner, John Griffith.

Tim's family is grateful for the exceptional care provided by Sparrow Hospital, the Sparrow Cancer Center and Sparrow Hospice.

Like many Michigan State University students, Tim wasn't quite ready to leave East Lansing after his undergraduate days and so stayed on for what turned out to be a 40-year career in MSU's Residential and Hospitality Services Division. He was in the final days of employment before retiring when his health failed completely.

Tim's greatest satisfactions lay in helping residence hall students and their parents navigate the complexities found at a large university and in coaching staff members and student employees to provide exceptional customer service. A consummate people-person, Tim enjoyed developing connections across the university so that when a problem was presented, he could pull the right people together to solve it.

Tim served on the Board of Directors of the East Lansing Art Festival for 11 years and, in the same spirit of helping his student residents and employees be successful, he helped develop the Emerging Artist Program that rewarded and encouraged new artists. Memorial contributions to this program may be made at

A gathering of Tim's family, friends and colleagues will be held on Thursday, August 16, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center on the Michigan State University campus, Big Ten Room C.

The family is being served by Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, East Lansing. On line condolences may be made at

Tim was never at a loss for words, even when he was going through pain from treatment he always had a joke or a kind word to share

What a wonderful person and a bright spot in so many people's lives. The memory of his laughter, corny jokes, and his positive attitude will be with me for the rest of my life.

In my memories of Tim Knight from the 1970's to just six weeks ago, Tim was always the same funny, vibrant, intelligent, witty, delightful, surprising, open, and caring person. Who you saw was who he always was. Only the very most special people in the world can pull that off for their entire life. I will miss him.

Tim, you made campus and the East Lansing community a much better place. I'll miss seeing your audi in front of Mary Mayo Hall and the hilarious e-mails you sent out to everyone. I hope that you're having a painless and fun time in heaven and that God cheers for the good ol' green and white ;) Everyone loves and misses you! Sparty On.

I had the privilege of working with Tim when he was a hall manager and I was on the residence life staff. He was always full of energy, out-going, optimistic, and a great problem solver. Tim approached issues and situations from the perspective of, "we can solve this and how can I make it better" no matter how complex or difficult. Giving his very best for the students and his staff were always first priorities for Tim; he represented the very best of what MSU is all about. I will miss his enthusiasm.

What a great friend, superior Spartan and counselor/father to thousands of students over so many years. We all learned from Tim. He would disipline with conviction and compasion. He never lost his spirit.
MSU has lost a genuine leader. Remember the lessons he taught.

Tim was a great guy. He taught me a lot about community policing and how to treat people in general when I was just a cub here at MSU. He will be missed.

Tim was a wonderful person. A gracious, generous person who loved a good laugh. Fondly remembering our dinner visits across Glenmoor Rd. during your Hillcrest Village condominium years. Our sincere condolences to you, John.
