Like so many over the years, I was a student of Virginia Bodman. Not the best student by any means, but one who learned many lessons from her about music, compassion, correction and leadership. She had a lasting impact on my life. My thoughts go out to her family in this time of sorrow; the learning continues.

Virginia (I think I was finally able to bring myself to use her first name ten years after I graduated from MSU) was my teacher in college for four years, and a good friend and mentor for over 35 years after.  She was a fine musician, a terrific teacher, and a caring, thoughtful and kind person—just one of those people whose basic decency makes them a force for good in their community and world.  Her influence on the lives and careers of her students will be a great legacy.  I can only hope to do half as well for my students as she did for hers.  Rebecca and I send our condolences to the family.
