Went to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on March 19, 2013 at the age of 89; born January 24, 1924 in Dyersburg, TN.
Walter served in the U.S. Marine Corp at the rank of Sergeant during WWII on Iwo Jima finishing his service at Okinawa. In 1955 he started working at Fisher Body until he retired in 1991. Walter enjoyed retirement by working on his house and his kids houses for many years.
As a young man he took on the duties of farming 32 acres instead of going to the 8th grade so his family could live. As a father he never stopped giving to his family.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife Sue; mother and father, Ruby Mae Owen and William Adkins; 3 brothers, Virgil and Louis Cupples and Kenneth Adkins and 2 sisters, Myra Moss and Dorothy Carter. Surviving are his daughters, Janice Adkins of Lansing, Sheryl (Jim) McIver of Brownstown, MI; sons, Wallace (Christie) of Killeen, TX, Terry (Doris) of Dyersburg, TN, Brian (Lisa) of Haslett and Brent (Jane) of Lansing; 11 grandchildren, Carol, Howard, Lou, Dustin, Allison, Brian, Jr., Erin, Scott, Brittaney, Raquel and Amber; brother, Morris (Ethel) Adkins of Chelsea, MI and special nephew, Billy Cupples of Las Vegas, NV.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 23, 11:00 a.m. at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing with the Rev. Curt W. Dalaba, officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, March 22 from 5-8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
