William Edward McCracken, 83, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2026. Born in Wichita, Kansas, on June 9, 1943, he was the son of Mary and Earl McCracken and grew up in Rolla, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents. Bill resided in East Lansing, Michigan.
Bill is survived by his wife of 56 years, Faye; his children, Molly McCracken (Vince Meehan), Michael McCracken, and Lynda (Tony) Keim; and his six grandchildren, Eleanor, Henry, and Adelaide Meehan, Audrey, Sean McCracken, and Cameron Keim. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Glee Barnard; his brother Jim (Jackie) McCracken; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Bill graduated from the School of Mines (now U of MO Rolla) with a degree in Chemical Engineering and later earned a master’s degree from the University of Michigan in Water Resources. He devoted 32 years of service to the State of Michigan in the Department of Environmental Quality, where his work reflected a steady commitment to the public good and to helping keep surface waters clean.
Bill met Faye in Vail, Colorado, in an intermediate ski class—an early moment that spoke to the quiet openness and steadiness that would mark their life together. At the time, Bill was working in Texas and Faye in Toronto, Canada. They skied once after they were married, but the story of how they met remained a cherished part of their family history.
A lifelong curious learner, Bill’s interests were wide and enduring. He was an avid golfer, a reader, a bridge player, an oil painter, and a collector of various things—pursuits that reflected both attentiveness and a thoughtful appreciation for detail. For 54 years, he was an active member of Central United Methodist Church, and for the last 25 years he especially valued his Sunday evening Vesper’s book study group that studied progressive Christianity.
Bill held a deep love for Lake Superior and the Porcupine Mountain State Park, a place he had been visiting since childhood. He took particular joy in hunting for agates along the Lake Superior shoreline. He also planted saplings that, over time, became a small forest at the “farm,” a living reflection of patience, hope, and quiet devotion. He planned family trips to many National Parks, creating opportunities for shared time and lasting memories, and in retirement he traveled internationally to many places.
Bill was cherished by those who knew him for being consistently supportive, loving, and kind. He was very loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 17, 2026, 11 am with visitation one hour prior at Central United Methodist Church, 215 N. Capitol Ave, Lansing, MI 48933. Luncheon to follow service at the church.
