William Douglas Ottinger, lovingly known as Doug, was born on September 16, 1942, in Wyandotte, Michigan, to William and Catherine Ottinger. He passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025, in Lansing, Michigan, with his wife by his side. Doug was a fighter through and through. He proudly served his country as a Military Police Officer in the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge, he began a career with Oldsmobile, where through dedication and hard work he advanced through the ranks into administration within General Motors. Doug met the love of his life on a blind date in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After a year of dating, they married and built a life together rooted in love, friendship, and devotion that lasted more than 48 years. An avid sports fan, Doug loved watching both professional and college athletics, especially cheering on the Michigan State Spartans at football and basketball games. Golf was one of his greatest passions—he played hundreds of courses over the years and golfed twice a week with his closest friends. Even when the weather turned cold, Doug could be found enjoying indoor golf. He also took great pride in tending to his yard and spending time with neighbors and friends. Doug was well known for his competitive spirit at the card table, especially as a “shark” at euchre. In retirement, he enjoyed collecting stamps and baseball cards, hobbies that reflected his appreciation for history and detail. He retired from General Motors in 1999, allowing him to devote more time to golf, family, and the activities he loved most. Above all else, Doug cherished being a father and grandfather. Doug endured a long and hard-fought battle with tongue cancer, which led to many health challenges in the years that followed. Despite this, he maintained a positive outlook, continued to enjoy life, and valued being around people.
Doug is survived by his loving wife, Cindy; his daughter, Kristen Barry; his grandchildren, Samantha and Charlie Barry; his sister, Denise Ottinger; his sisters-in-law, Judy (Emery) Hirschler and June Hess; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
