Barbara L. Smith, 77, of Washington, Missouri, formerly of Bartonville and Peoria passed away at 12:03 a.m. Saturday, March 6, 2021 at The Arbors at Victorian Place of Washington. She was born on March 20, 1943 in Peoria to Roy and Thelma (Lee) Bremmer. She married Richard Smith on July 11, 1964 in Peoria. He preceded her in death on July 10, 2001 in Bartonville.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; sister Jackie Carpentier; sister, Shirley McClaskey; brother, Ronald Bremmer; brother in law, Randy Swords and brother in law Don McClaskey.
Barbara is survived by her one son, Rich (Lynn) Smith of Bartlett, IL; one daughter, Ann (John) Kraft of Wentzville, MO; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Kathy Swords of East Peoria, IL; three brothers, Jerry (Gerry) Bremmer of Portland, OR; Rick Bremmer of Tucson, AZ; and Randy Bremmer of Las Vegas, NV; and many nieces and nephews.
She greatly enjoyed spending time with her family and was always eager to watch them play sports or compete in dance and gymnastics. She enjoyed bowling, playing pool, dancing, being with friends, Elvis Presley music and watching the St. Louis Cardinals.
Although diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s over a decade ago, she was able to move to a retirement community in Missouri where she could be close to her youngest grandchildren. She was able to be with friends and family and enjoyed the activities, excursions, music and social opportunities. Eventually the disease process progressed to the point she had to move to an Alzheimer’s assisted living facility where she continued to be happy and make new friends. Unfortunately, the final year was difficult and the pandemic limited visits from family until the final days before her passing.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. at Remmert Funeral Home in East Peoria. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home on Saturday.
Cremation rites will be accorded following the services.
