Betty Ann Smith

She was born on Oct. 8, 1930 in Peoria to Kathrine and Harry (Sutter) Smith. She married Frank Smith Sep. 5, 1964. He passed away Oct. 18, 1981 in Peoria. She was also preceded in death by two sons: Steven and Randall Smith, two brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include one daughter, Denise Smith of Peoria, two sons: Thomas (Holly) Smith of Green Valley, Neal (Roselieta) Smith of Lake Charles, LA, three stepsons: Frank Smith of Pekin, Wesley (Mary Jane) Smith of College Station, TX, Ross (Ruth Ann Wildman) Smith of San Antonio, TX, eleven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Betty retired from SBC/AMERITEH after 31 years, where she served as operator, supervisor, repair tech. and union president of Local 5014 Communications Workers of America for six years.

She was a member of the East Peoria First United Methodist Church, the Yokefellow Sunday School Class and the Ruth Circle.

Betty was a member of the East Peoria Beautification Committee, a member and Past Worthy Matron of I.W. Donmeyer Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, a past member of the Landmark Ladies Bowling League, a member and past president of Fondulac Ladies Golf League, a past president of the Peoria Council Telephone Pioneers of America, a member and past president of the Peoria Area Telephone Retirees, where she was active in their “Shoes For Kids” program and a repair tech. for the National Talking Books Program. She volunteered for many years at Bel-wood and St. Josephs nursing homes and for many other local charities. She received the President’s volunteer service award from President George Bush in 2002.

Visitation will be Friday Jan. 15, 2016 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Remmert Funeral Home in East Peoria. Funeral services will be Saturday Jan. 16, 2016 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Cremation rites will be accorded following the services.

Memorials may be made to the Shoes For Kids program or the East Peoria First United Methodist Church.
