

He was born June 13, 1941 in Jackson, TN to Wallace and Alice (Hoskins) Groom. He married Roberta Sage Dec. 20, 1969 at the First Presbyterian Church in Peoria. She survives along with three sons: Christopher (Sue) Haney of Tampa, FL, Mark Haney of Tampa, FL, Brian (Erin Ogle) Grooms of Spring Bay, one daughter, Jana Grooms of Peoria, four grandchildren: Josh Haney of Texas, Natascha Haney of Pinckneyville, IL, Brandon Robison and Madison Grooms of Spring Bay, one step-grandson, Josh Vandeford of Benton, IL, “Pseudo” grandchildren: Megan, Caleb and Madison Walsh and their parents Steve and Rhonda Walsh of Toledo, IL. He was also survived by one sister, Charlotte Keeton of Peoria, two brothers: Wally (Sue) Groom of Henry, Steve (Dot) Groom of Franklin, TN, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his dog Shadow and several other dogs and numerous cats.
Dan was a Marine Corps veteran from the Vietnam Era. He retired in 1994 after 30 years at Caterpillar. He enjoyed bowling, golfing and restoring old cars. He was a Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan.
He was a great father and an even better grandfather. As much as we hated to see him go, he’s finally free from the pain and suffering of the last few months.
Funeral services will be Wednesday July 3, 2013 at 10 a.m. at Remmert Funeral Home in East Peoria. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Spring Bay Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to The Ark animal Shelter at 477 State Route 26 in Lacon.
