

She was born May 3, 1917 in East Peoria to Samuel B. and Anna (Bricka) Banz. She married Edward Joseph Bergman in Peoria on Oct. 31, 1937. He preceded her in death on July 25, 1979. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Doug Banz and one sister, Betty Spring.
Surviving are her son, Jim (fiancé Gayle Johnson) Bergman; three granddaughters, Trish (Allen) Ackley, Mindy (Troy) Smith, Nicole (Ross Jr.) Cortino; six great-grandchildren, Robbie Bauman Jr., Ali Ackley, Jacob and Madi Smith, Gina and Ross Cortino III; and one great-great-granddaughter, Aya Kay.
Irene was a realtor for most of her adult life owning and operating the Greater Peoria Realty Company. She also owned and operated the Bergman House for Aging until retiring in 2000.
She had been a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in East Peoria since her early childhood and was one of the oldest members.
Two of her favorite passions in life were the Chicago Cubs and playing cards with her family. She was affectionately known as “Nana” to her family and was a very loving and caring mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Remmert Funeral Home in East Peoria with Rev. Kurt Mews officiating. Visitation will be one hour before services at the funeral home on Thursday. Entombment will be at American Mausoleum in Peoria.
Memorials may be made to her Church or the American Diabetes Association.
