Born Aug. 18, 1926 in Dahlgren, IL to Charles Leonard and Matilda (Thom) Schilling. She married Jacob Anton Karcher in St. Louis, MO on Aug. 28, 1946. He survives.
Also surviving are four children, Ken Karcher, Jan Karcher, Anita (Bill) Brown, Debbie (Dan) Thompson; four grandchildren, Annah and Karsten Brown, Renna (Stephen) Brunton, Hayley Thompson; two sisters, Dorothy Glatz, Shirley Ewald; and one brother, Charles Schilling. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Leroy.
Irma was a homemaker. She and her husband enjoyed square dancing and playing cards. She loved to sew and crochet, making hundreds of hats for children and lap robes for seniors. She was an avid gardener, canned vegetables and made various sauces and jellies, and was well known as the Cake Lady, because of her talent for cake decorating.
She was a member of St. Monica’s Church in East Peoria, where she was a former president of the Ladies Guild, and was an active member and officer of the Fun After 50 group.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011 at St. Monica’s Church in East Peoria with Msgr. James Kruse officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Remmert Funeral Home in East Peoria with further visitation one hour before Mass at church on Saturday. Burial will be at Fondulac Cemetery in East Peoria.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to her church, or St. Jude Midwest Affiliate.
