Born December 15, 1984 to Joe and Janice Baumgardner of Hanna City, Jay brought joy and inspiration to all who knew him. From a young age, Jay faced life with strength, playfulness, and a gentle spirit that touched the lives of many.
Jay is survived by three siblings: Joe (Laura) Baumgardner of Peoria, Jeana (Caleb) Johnson of Hanna City, and Jeremy (Brittany) Baumgardner of Glasford. He is also survived by four nieces and three nephews. Loving Jay was one of the many joys in life for Jay’s family. He taught his family members empathy and compassion, shaping them into the people they are today.
Jay proudly competed in the Special Olympics, where he won numerous medals in the tennis ball throw event. Jay loved being taken on walks, and some of his happiest moments were walks with his loved ones around the lake outside his home. Jay embodied a childlike spirit, never losing his love for cartoons, pinwheels, spinning his shoes, and slinkies.
For many years, Jay was a cherished resident of Swann Special Care Center in Champaign, where he received loving care by their exceptional staff. His family is forever grateful to the devoted staff who treated him with dignity, compassion, and affection. The staff at Swann exemplified God’s love in the care they provided for Jay.
Jay will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he faced many challenges, Jay’s life was a testament to the power of love, resilience, and community.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 17, 2025 at St. John Lutheran Church in Bartonville at 1:30 p.m. with a Celebration of Life from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the same location.
Memorials may be made in Jay’s honor to Swann Special Care Center in Champaign, Illinois or to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
