Joan E. Simms

Joan E. Simms, 88, of Morton, passed away on Friday, April 8, 2022 at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria. She was born on December 17, 1933 in Canton, a daughter of Dewey and Mary (Marinich) Wheeler. Joan married Charles Simms on June 20, 1953 in Canton. He preceded her in death on June 21, 2013 in Peoria.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Charles Steven Simms, Jr.; and brother, Don Wheeler.

Joan is survived by her three children, Diane Fifield of Morton, Charles (Abby) Simms of East Peoria, and Mary (Peter, Jr.) Marathas of Scituate, MA; her Sister-in-Law, Susan Simms of Morton, and 10 grandchildren: Amber (Mark) Kostner, Casson (Tiffany) White, Lani (Brian) Adams, Mary Annen (Stacy Hess), Jill Massengale, Maggie (Austin) Williams, Rachel Marathas, Sara Marathas, Peter Marathas III and Elizabeth Marathas, and many great-grandchildren. Also survived by her brothers, Fred Wheeler of Syracuse, NY, Bernard (Edna) Wheeler of Lafayette, LA and David Wheeler of Bryant, IL.

She last worked for Caterpillar, Inc. as a control operator in the computer center, retiring in 1988.

She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in East Peoria. She most enjoyed spending time with her family. She loved to crochet doilies and gave them away to any admirers. Joan made many quilts, recently donating one to her church's raffle. She also loved traveling with her husband Chuck and to find treasures at garage sales and antique stores.

Joan's funeral service will be at 11:00 am Monday, April 11, 2022 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in East Peoria. Rev. Brian Pape will officiate. Her visitation will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am also on Monday at the church. Interment will be in Fondulac Cemetery in East Peoria.
