Born in Chattanooga on May 3, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Leven James Turner and Sara Keith Turner.
Barbara grew up on Lookout Mountain. After graduating from Girls Preparatory School in 1954, she attended the University of Georgia. She relocated to several southern states before returning to her hometown later in life.
Barbara had a long career at the Better Business Bureau in Chattanooga, from which she retired as vice president in 2001. Previously she worked as a preschool teacher for many years and continued to work with children after retiring.
Barbara had the soul of an adventurer and artist. She loved traveling to Europe, bird watching, walking on the beach, picking up seashells, gardening and reading John Grisham novels. She studied early childhood education and art and was a talented painter and banjo player. Barbara also loved pets and shared her home with many beloved cats and dogs.
In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Richard Yount, nieces Lori Allen and Alyssa Allen Fielder and nephew Mark Allen.
Barbara is survived by her daughter Elizabeth and her husband, Roger Qualey, of Chattanooga; son Robert Long and his wife, Ramona, of Newark, Delaware; sister Bunny and her husband, Bill Allen, of Cave Creek, Arizona; grandchildren Sumner and Talbot Long of Delaware, and Anna and Logan Qualey of Chattanooga; great grandchildren Sydney and Francis Long of Delaware; and nieces Sara Allen Johnson and Karen Allen of Arizona.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Hospice of
Chattanooga, the Audubon Society or the animal charity of your choice.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 14 at 11 a.m. at Forest Hills Cemetery, 4016 Tennessee Ave., Chattanooga, with the Rev. J. Glenn Moseley officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 13 at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 S Moore Road in East Ridge.
