
Barbara Ann Carpenter Wehunt passed away peacefully on Friday, October 14, 2016. She was born on January 15, 1930 to the union of Maggie Addie Crownover and Eldridge Lee Carpenter. She attended Avondale Grammar School, Hardy Jr. High and was a graduate of Central High School, class of 1948. At Central, Barbara was a member of the National Honor Society having the distinction of making all A’s. At the age of 14 Barbara began working in Bill Penney’s grocery store. She also worked at Davenport Hosiery Mills. Following high school graduation, Barbara married the love of her life, Thomas James Wehunt. She retired in 1994 from the Tennessee Dept. of Employment Security (Labor and Workforce Development).
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Tom Wehunt; her brothers; Eldridge Lee Carpenter, Jr. (Bud), Gordon Carpenter, Carl Carpenter, James Howard Carpenter, and step-brother, Charlie Smith; one sister, Frieda Louise Carpenter.
Barbara is survived by a son, Thomas J. Wehunt, Jr. of Chattanooga, TN, a daughter, Marilyn (Bob) Glenn of San Antonio, TX, and a daughter Denise (Stephen) Henley of Brentwood, TN. Her grandchildren are Mary Elizabeth (Corey) Baratta of Gainesville, GA, Capt. Robert (Jessica) Glenn, USAF, South Korea and Emily (Christopher) Garcia of Lubbock, TX. She is also survived by 8 great-grandchildren, Paige, Adrian, Haedyn, Molly, Joel, Caroline, Theodore, and Peyton; a sister, Betty Frances Mitchell of Chattanooga, a step brother, Clifford (Wilma) Smith of Franklin, TN; a half-sister, Vera Sue (Mickey) Bibbey of Chattanooga, TN, a half- brother, Bill (Billie) Carpenter of Louisville, KY and a sister-in-law, Joanne Carpenter of Chattanooga, TN; many loving nieces and nephews; special, dear friends are Martha Eichelberger, Becky Williams, and Bob and Charlotte White. Special thanks to niece, Daphne Lynch, Bijan and Katherine Mansouri, John and Martha Hobby, Ray and Judy Baird and Hazel Albert for their love and support.
The family would like to acknowledge the loving gentle care of Gentiva staff.
Barbara was a member of East Brainerd Church of Christ. She was a loving, devoted sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She will be greatly missed.
Pallbearers will be Bob Glenn, Robb Glenn, Adrian Glenn, Stephen Henley and Woody Carpenter.
Graveside services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Minister John Cupp officiating. The family will receive friends from 4-7 PM Tuesday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Road.
