

Born on February 18, 1935, in Nashville, Tennessee, to the late Bernard H. Brown, Sr. and Angela Hill Brown, Bernard moved with his family to Chattanooga at the age of ten. After proudly serving his country in the United States Marine Corps, he returned home and married the love of his life, Barbara, with whom he shared 63 wonderful years.
Bernard was a member of the first graduating class of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School and a graduate of Notre Dame High School. A devoted family man, he and Barbara could often be found cheering at their children’s and grandchildren’s games and activities—always their biggest supporters.
Known affectionately as “B,” Bernard and his brother, James “Dickie” Brown, co-founded Brown Construction Company, building a respected and successful business specializing in grading, excavation, and the development of residential communities throughout Chattanooga and North Georgia.
He was a faithful member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, where he worshiped alongside his family for many years.
Bernard was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Brown; children, Tripp (Barbara) Brown, Britt Brown, and Beth (Donnie) Covey; grandchildren, Holli Ann, Ali, and Katie Covey, and Huntley Brown; Step grandchildren, Catherine Choate and Connor (Grace) Choate and their children, brother, James “Dickie” (Barbara) Brown; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday, October 31, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, with Father Mike Nolan officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 30, from 4:00–7:00 p.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home – East Chapel. A committal service at Chattanooga National Cemetery will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Notre Dame High School.
