Brenda Joyce Crowder, born in Chattanooga, TN, August 29, 1948, passed peacefully in her sleep at home on Thursday, August 13, 2026 after a brief illness. Brenda was many things to many people - a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, a devoted daughter, a caring aunt, a true sister, and a friend like no other - and she will be profoundly missed by those she left behind.
Brenda graduated from Oakwood Adventist Academy in 1966. She moved to Detroit, MI then to Durham, N.C., before returning to Chattanooga to be closer to family in 1977. Brenda worked at Seaboard Farms many years and as a Child Care Provider, and later as a Home Health Aide, dedicating the last decades of her life to caring for her parents, Marilyn and Thomas Benning, until their passing in 2021 and 2009.
Brenda’s life was shaped by her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, whom she counted as her truest Friend and dearest Companion. She was an enthusiastic member of the Orchard Park and South Bay Seventh-day Adventist Churches and Anchor of Hope Branch Sabbath School. She enjoyed serving as a prayer warrior, ministering to the homeless of the greater Chattanooga area, and sharing her faith journey with her family, friends, and community.
Brenda will be remembered as a blessing by all of those whose lives she touched - for her easy laughter, her honest and generous heart, her love of singing and beautiful alto voice, and her willingness to provide a listening ear. She was loyal, selfless, and deeply caring, giving of herself freely to those she loved. Above all, she will be remembered as an extraordinary Granny—the greatest, in fact.
Brenda was preceded in death by; Her parents and 2 siblings, Larry Benning and Audrey Smith. She leaves to her legacy; 3 children, Nanette Crowder, Michael Crowder and Lisa Crowder; 11 grandchildren, Kignon, Rickey, Devone, Tamara, Kenneth, LaDarrius, Kanisha, Michael Jr., Manteca, Marjessio, and Micquan; and a host of great-grandchildren. Also left to cherish her memory; 4 siblings, Irvin, Loretta (Matt), Sylvia, Greg (Maria); nieces and nephews from Detroit and around the country, and many other relatives and friends.
A memorial service celebrating Brenda's life will be held at her home on Sunday August 30, 2026, from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm.
