Dr. Carmen Allison Smith Griffin

Dr. Carmen Allison Smith Griffin of Chattanooga passed away Sunday, October 11, 2020. She was a member of Brainerd Baptist Church. Dr. Griffin was a graduate of Rhea County High School, earned her Bachelors Degree in 1971 at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga then her Master’s and Doctorate in Education from LSU in New Orleans, LA. She taught Adult Education in Bradley County, Chattanooga City and Delgatto Community College in Louisiana before retiring to Chattanooga in 1988. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dr. William Frank Smith; son, Dr. William Keith Smith; parents, Edgar Lee and Ruby Vandergriff Allison; sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Lynn Rhea. Survivors include her husband John R. Griffin; daughter and son-in-law Donna Smith Harmon and David Harmon of Cleveland, TN; grandson, John D. Borders, III of Cleveland, TN; granddaughter Kristen Allison Rivero and daughter-in-law Debbie Rivero of New Orleans, LA; great-granddaughter Stella Allison Borders of Wilson, NC; brother and sister-in-law Ed and Charlotte Allison of Pensacola, FL; step-daughters and sons-in-law Cheryle and Joe Miller and children of Chattanooga, TN, Angela and Morris Bryan and children of Greenville, SC and Melanie and Scott Gentry and children of Franklin, TN. The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice of Chattanooga for their excellent care over the past year. Private funeral services will be held at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Road with Dr. Steve Rowland and the Rev. Bill Bond officiating. Burial will be in Spring City Cemetery. There will be no visitation due to the national health crisis. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity. Having known John Griffin since about 1967 I know that Carmen made him very happy. I enjoyed going on trips with them when Brainerd Baptist Senior Adults could travel...before the bus was sold...
