He was a member of First Centenary United Methodist Church. David was a graduate of UTC with a Bachelors in History and received his Law Degree from Vanderbilt University. He was a partner in Wagner Nelson & Weeks Law Firm. He had been a board member of Bonny Oaks Foundation, the Shriners Hospitals for Children and St. Andrews United Methodist Church. David was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in WWII and Korea. He was a Past President of the Chattanooga Half Century Club, Past Potentate of the Alhambra Shrine, and a member of the Scottish Rite, York Rite and the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Bell Nelson and his second wife, Bernice Pitts Nelson; a son Douglas Edward Nelson; a brother Gillis Nelson; and his parents David Eugene Nelson, SR and Eleanor Borg.
Survivors include son Gene (Mary) Nelson; one granddaughter, Amber (Daniel) Harvey; three great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Braiden and Danielle; one brother John and one sister Ruth; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday October 2, 2019 in the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Rd. Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Military Honors. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Chattanooga Half Century Club.
The family will receive friends from 4:00-8:00 PM Tuesday October 1, 2019 at the funeral home.
