David was born in Riverside, CA., on April 6, 1942, to the late Eldon and Martha Porter. He received a bachelor’s degree from Bob Jones University and thus began his travels worldwide. He served as a missionary in Russia, taught school in Hawaii and wound up teaching history for 18 years at East Ridge High School where he also coached soccer. He also taught at Tennessee Temple for 8 years. During his travels, he and his wife, Norma, would often be approached by his former students and players and were told what a profound impact he made in his students’ lives. That is truly a statement in one’s legacy that is left behind.
David was a history guru and could tell you just about anything about anyone or any place.
He and Norma were faithful members of Brainerd Baptist Church and attended the Friendship Sunday School Class.
Preceding David in death are his daughter, Regina Floyd York and his parents.
David’s memory will be cherished by his surviving wife of 28 years, Norma Worley Porter; his children, Susan Evans (Kelly); Beckie Self (Scott); Tracey Haupt; David Michael Porter; Tommy Smith (Karen); Michael Smith; Angela Camp (Danny); and Lisa Hartley, 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, brothers, Frank Porter (Connie); Tim Porter; Jim Porter (Margaret); and Dan Porter (Ruth Ann), sister, Carol Krensky (Bob), numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, many dear friends, former students and players.
The family will receive friends at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, from 4-8pm. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at 1pm in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Jimmy Murphy officiating. A burial will follow at the Lakewood Memory Gardens South, Rossville, GA.
