Don "Whitey" Matthews

Born on December 15, 1935, in Bridgeport, Alabama, to the late John and Stella Matthews, Don was a proud graduate of Bridgeport High School. After graduation, he began a long career with CSX Railroad, where he dedicated 47 years of service—remarkably, without ever riding a train.

A devoted member of Wauhatchie Methodist Church, Don’s faith and commitment were central to his life and character.

Don was an avid golfer and a diehard Alabama football fan. He treasured time spent with his family and friends and was known as “the life of the party,” never meeting a stranger.

He was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings: Geneva, Doshie, Bayne, Edna, Tony, Louise, Luke, and Rubye.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 37 years, Cathy; his children, Jeff Matthews and Donna Mullins (Jeff), both of Chattanooga; his sister, Nanna Whitcher (Warren) of Bridgeport, AL; as well as many dear friends and golf buddies.

A memorial service celebrating Don’s larger-than-life spirit will be held at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wauhatchie Methodist Church and/or Hearth Hospice.

Don’s kindness, devotion, and love of golf and Alabama football will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
