A native of Chattanooga and graduate of Chattanooga City High School, Don received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in Music from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago. He taught music in Sequatchie County from 1969 until his retirement, sharing his love of music with his students and his talents on the saxophone, clarinet and keyboard. Don was a former member of the Chattanooga Clarinet Choir and played at numerous venues in the area, including for dinner cruises on the Southern Belle Riverboat and at Rock City’s annual Enchanted Garden of Lights.
Don was a veteran of the United States Navy and an enthusiastic member of American Legion Blair Post 95 in East Ridge, where he played saxophone in the band for Legion gatherings and events. He was also a published author for the Chattanooga Area Historical Association’s Journal and enjoyed discovering and writing about little-known or long forgotten facts of Chattanooga’s history.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary Frances Beane Holland Worley, step-grandson Carter Holland, parents Earl A. and Sadie E. Worley and sister Earla W. Holder.
He is survived by two stepsons, Alvis W. Holland III of Chattanooga and Steve Holland (Lucie) of Alexandria, VA, along with step-grandson Randy Holland.
Funeral services with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. on December 23 at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Ret. U.S. Navy Commander Philip Sumrall officiating. Members of the American Legion Post 95 will serve as pallbearers.
