

Born in Rhea County on March 13th, 1939, Helen graduated from Dayton High School where she was a star athlete in tennis and basketball. After graduating she worked for DuPont before becoming a LPN until hearing loss led to retirement. Helen enjoyed following the Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team and was a huge fan of former coach Pat Summitt. Helen and Charlie were lifelong Atlanta Braves fans never missing a game.
She and her husband Charlie were married in 1976, lived in and around Chattanooga, and remained inseparable for decades until his passing in June of 2022.
Helen is survived by her siblings Johnny, Mack, Danny, and Barbara; children Scott (Tracy) Smith and Renee Jolley, three grandsons, whom she took great pride in, Scott Smith, Cole Jolley, and Conor Thompson, along with many nieces and nephews she dearly loved.
She was preceded in death by her parents Gladys and Con Ballard; sister Kat; and husband Charles.
The staff at Martin Boyd Christian Home became part of our family during Helen and Charlie’s residence. The care and love from everyone there made these difficult times manageable. We also owe gratitude and love for Hospice of Chattanooga in particular Nurse Kim for loving and caring for both Helen and Charlie. Thanks and love to Sherry Glove,MSN,NP-C at Grace Home Primary Care for all she did for Helen and Charlie.
Lastly , thank you to Mike at Chattanooga Funeral Home East Chapel for his compassion and thoughtfulness while we make final plans for Helen.
Helen and Charlie will be buried together at the National Cemetery at a date TBD.
