He was a graduate of Soddy Daisy High School and attended David Lipscomb College before enrolling in the United States Navy. His dedication and service were a source of pride to those who knew him. He was employed with Mayfield Dairy for 35 years and retired in 1998.
A lifelong Tennessean, James was an avid golfer and even owned 4 sets of golf clubs. He was a big jokester, and he never met a stranger.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Larry Ratliffe.
James is lovingly remembered by his wife of 25 years, Alice, his children, Teresa Morgan (Mylon), Kim Foster (Justin Hindman), and Jay Jones (Heidi), his grandchildren, Lyndsay Lauer (Yuri), Jacob Foster (Dacie Burton), Joshua Foster, Mason Jones and Ryleigh Jones, and many dear friends.

A Celebration of James' Life will be held graveside in the Chattanooga National Cemetery on Thursday June 5, 2025 at 2:00 pm with military honors being provided by the United States Navy Honor Guard and the American Legion Post 95.
