Jerry V Adams

October 13, 1943June 7, 2018

Jerry V Adams, a Christian student, teacher, and writer, and a CPA and community service volunteer, departed this world June 7, 2018. (John 11:26 and Hebrew 9:27)

As a born again believer (John 3:1/7 and I Peter 1:23) in Jesus as the Christ and the Son of the Living God, Jerry’s soul went to heaven to be present with the Lord (II Corinthians 5:8) awaiting the resurrection of the bodies of believers (I Corinthians 15:52) as the Lord promised. (John 11:25 and I Thessalonians 4:14/18)

For many years, Jerry taught the Sanctuary class of the former East Lake Baptist Church and The Seekers Bible class (Matthew 6:33) of Brainerd Baptist Church where he was a member. Jerry was an exponent of dispensational Christian theology and an avid Bible student who studied for several years under Ted DeMoss, President of the Christian Business Men’s Committee, and the teachings of Howard C. Estep, J. Vernon McGee, and others. He wrote the book Christian Bible Challenge and a prophecy series which he provided to the Bible study class participants, family members, and others.

A native of Chattanooga, Jerry’s ancestors came to Virginia from Western Europe in the 1700s then settled in middle Tennessee about 1800 shortly after Tennessee was admitted to the Union. His grandparents moved to Chattanooga in the early 1900s. Horace G. and Mattie May were his parents, and his sister is Charlene Bankston. Another sister, Bobbie Jean Ballard, died in 2011.

Jerry married the girl he greatly loved, Diane Clark, daughter of Robert L. and Doris Towers Clark. They met when he was 17 and she was 15 and became a matched pair for life. Their children are David Clark Adams of Chattanooga and Bonnie Elizabeth (Mrs. Brumley Smith) of Columbus, Georgia. Their grandchildren are Taylor and Lindy Adams and Elley and Clark Smith. Their great-grandson is Jackson Daniel Adams, Son of Christi Wilson. Their daughter-in-law, Kelly Adams, predeceased him.

After graduating from the University of Tennessee in 1965, Jerry practiced accounting for more than fifty years. He was a founder of the Decosimo CPA firm in 1971 with Marion Fryar and his senior business partner Joe Decosimo. With God’s blessing, the firm grew rapidly to exceed one hundred CPAs. After thirty years as the firm’s managing partner, Jerry relinquished his management role but continued practicing with the Decosimo firm in senior roles as a business and tax advisor. Kathy Seymour was his long time assistant.

Jerry wanted his obituary to express his gratitude to the many wonderful clients he had the opportunity to serve, to the exceptional staff with whom he worked, and for the volunteer opportunities to serve his profession and his community. He served on the boards of the Salvation Army of Chattanooga and Bible in the Schools for more than twenty-five years.

Jerry’s family wishes to thank Dr. Sumeet Bhushan, Dr. Jitendra Ghandi, Dr. Hunter Jennings, Dr. Richard Moody, Dr. Chirag Patel, the late Dr. Ronald Brooksbank, the staff at Chattanooga Imaging, Memorial Hospital, and Erlanger Hospital for the excellent medical treatment they provided Jerry through the years. Their care extended his time here on earth as well as his quality of life. A special thank you to Janet Weise, RN and Avalon Hospice for their comforting end of life care.

A celebration of Jesus’s redemption and salvation of Jerry will be held at 3PM Saturday at Chattanooga Funeral Home East Chapel, 404 South Moore Road with the Rev. William Jacques officiating. Visitation will be from 2-3 PM Saturday and again following the service for one hour. Jerry was an organ donor, and his body was buried at Forest Hills Cemetery.

Diane we are so sorry to learn of Jerry’s passing and that we didn’t get together more. Life seems to be too busy anymore. I will never forget keeping Jerry up all night before your wedding. He told us we couldn’t go walking at midnight when we were trying to stay awake that the police would get us. We didn’t believe him but the police stopped us about a block from the house and wanted to know what we were doing. When we told them they said to keep walking. We would love to hear from you. I will always be thankful for Jerry’s help in getting me started in developing a health care company many years ago. Jerry and Joe Decosimo were always available to provide the support I needed. Jerry was brilliant, always there to share his advice, professional and has been a great resource in helping Chattanooga’s business community grow to what it is today! I am thankful for his life and his family is in my prayers.

Grace and I met Jerry through Seekers Sunday Schoo Class. Until my injury I was able to listen to his teachings from each Sunday school lessons. He always came prepared. After my injury he mailed me each Sundays lesson and details. He was a man of great humility and integrity. I remember you and Jerry visiting me at the Hospital every evening with lunch bag for Grace. I am a receipient of his generosity. When I went to visit India for a treatment, Jerry came to airport to send me off. He handed me an envelope with a generous gift. In addition to that he sent me another generous gift to meet my medical expenses while I was in India. He was a Godly man who never expected anything in return. He practiced Jesus teaching that “when you give don’t let left hand know what righ hand does.. He did not want to be in the limelight. He did good to others in secret. He placed others before him. Grace and I will miss him. But this separation is only for a short time. We all will meet him when our turn come. Meanwhile rest assured that you will be in our prayers.

Jerry made such an impression on me when we first attended his class. His love of the Lord and his soft mannerisms reminded me of the great bible teachers I had the privilege knowing. He will be in my heart always as he asks the question “What is the main theme of the whole bible?”

Dear Sweet Diane & family,
We remember our first years at Brainerd and Jerry’s welcoming us into the Seekers class. What a privilege to have sat under his teaching for several years. The sweet fellowship in & outside his class was a reflection of who Jerry was. He was always kind & geerous & quietly meeting needs of so many people. Our heart breaks that God chose to take him home early, but what a blessing to know where he is living now free of pain & suffering. We regret we are out of town tending to my 93 yr. old sister today and cannot be at Jerry’s Celebration service. We send much love & prayers for today & the days ahead.
Love, Roger& Darlene Ross

It has been such a blessing to have sat under Jerry’s teaching in God’s Word. He always encouraged me to learn more of our Savior. He was a man of utmost integrity in his life. His love for Christ, His Word , and for his family, has for me been a portrait of our Lord. The God of all comfort be close to you and your family.

Bonnie and family
I am so very sorry.
Your Dad was a wonderful man.
It’s very hard for me to understand what peace our loved ones are in but I know that it’s far beyond our comprehension and for that I am grateful.
I hope you will find comfort in each other and your precious memories.
